Programs step all over other programs. They will steal filetype
associations. Some media programs are notorious for this stealing, like
QuickTime and RealPlayer.

Don't expect a lot of intelligence from game developers. Their focus is
on writing a game and figuring out how to best to make it play, not how
to make it friendly to your system. They're boobs when it comes to
cooperating with the OS and other applications. Game code is crap and
the most unstable code you can have in your system. They also love to
play copy-protection tricks that can screwup the OS or apps or even
interfere with the use of your own hardware. Some even install
multiplayer software that you might not use or phone-home spyware (which
you can disable using a good firewall). That's why I have a 2nd primary
partition where the games get installed and an image to restore that
partition after I'm done with the game (no uninstall required; just
reimage the partition and all their garbage is gone).
